Why we ask about sex at birth

Insurers in Canada set life insurance rates using sex at birth, because some health risks and life expectancy differ by sex. We ask only so your price is accurate.

We understand your sex at birth may be different from your gender identity. To talk about how this applies to you, call a licensed broker at 1-877-654-6119.

What counts as tobacco or nicotine?

Choose Yes if you have used any of these in the past 12 months:

Otherwise choose No. Cannabis is not tobacco, but insurers ask about it separately and their rules differ. Your broker will go over it with you.

How we are paid

Protect Your Wealth is an independent brokerage. When a policy is issued, the insurer pays us a commission. You pay no fee to us, and the commission does not add to your premium.

Commission rates vary by insurer and product. Our recommendation is based on your needs, and you can ask us about our compensation at any time.

How much coverage do I need?

The right amount depends on what you want the money to do. Most people think about:

Pick an amount that feels close for now. A licensed broker can work through the numbers with you before you apply.

What counts?

Choose Yes if you have ever been diagnosed with or treated for any of these, or you are waiting on tests or results:

Choose Yes even if it is well controlled, treated with medication, or you feel fine today. Minor things that fully healed, like a broken bone or a past infection, do not count. Not sure? Choose Yes and we will check it for you.

What counts as income?

Each insurer decides how much income it can insure. A rough figure is fine here; your broker confirms it with you.
